Fall is right around the corner and everyone is already itching for the cooler season to be on us. Pumpkin, gorgeous changing leaves, and Halloween are right around the corner. BUT- it’s really not that cold yet guys. Definitely not cool enough for the warm knits, tights, or riding boots that are nearly upon us. It requires a delicate balance to create a perfect in-between look that keeps you cool but lets you grab ahold of your favorite season. Below are some tips on transitioning to Fall clothing right now.

Fall Transitioning Outfit Ideas

  • Mix the popular floral summer trend with black/other dark shades. Florals are spilling over into Fall as a popular staple so you can continue to wear your pieces next season.
  • Along that same note, pair your colorful busy patters with dark colors or black (like I did in the photos above).
  • Layer an unbuttoned plaid button down over a tank top for light layering (plaid really provides that Fall feel!).
  • Wear a sweater with lots of cutouts/holes/large crocheting patterns over a white tank with shorts and booties.
  • Throw on your felt hats with your bright summer colors.
  • Pair your favorite dresses with leather leggings.
  • Keep your chambray tops going, pairing with black ripped jeans, camel, or olive green pants.
  • Add scarves to everything. Now is the perfect time to actually wear the “summer scarf” look without hardcore sweating.
  • Layer light/sheer cardigans over graphic tees and pair with skinny jeans or flares in a dark wash.
  • Long sleeved rompers are literally made for Fall. Try shades of wine or black for that Fall feel.
  • Along that same vein, you can pair long sleeved billowy tops with shorts and sandals or booties. It’s still way too hot for riding boots though!
  • Minimalism and monochromatic looks are our friends right now. Keeping everything black and white lends that cool almost-winter-but-luckily-not-a-blizzard-yet vibe.
  • Start to incorporate these shades: red wine, mustard yellow, olive green, black, navy, plum.
  • Layer long sleeve tops under your summer dresses.

Co-Hosting The Wednesday Pants Linkup!

This week I’m excited to be co-hosting a vacation The Wednesday Pants Link-Up with Allison of Sydney Fashion Hunter. Allison created her blog to share her experiences of hunting down that perfect fashion item in the beautiful harbour city she calls home. She’s a globe trotting, shoe loving, designer handbag toting Aussie who loves to shop up a storm, preferably with a wine glass in hand. On the blog she mixes high end and high street and in “The Wednesday Pants” series she has set herself a challenge to wear the same white pair of Calvin Klein pants every Wednesday for an entire year, styled differently of course! This week Allison is in beautiful Koh Phi Phi Thailand and showing her beach chic. Head on over to her blog and follow along.

Happy birthday to Shian, that’s the theme song for today! TBH birthdays used to be my favorite day of the year but I think I have finally reached the year that has put me at just trying to make every day as great a day possible.

This year has probably been the most life changing/crazy/happy/sad/stressful/maturing years I’ve ever had. I moved to New York City, just scored an amazing internship with a fashion PR company, and even got invited to fashion week! All these things have been fantastic and I’ve put a lot of hard work in to achieve these goals.

BUT. Philosophical Shian on her birthday just wants to share this with you guys. I am routinely committed to keeping this a strictly fashion (or accessories) blog, as you’ve probably noticed, but every once in a while I like to sprinkle in some life with you guys. Like my outfit in these photos, sometimes the best thing you can do is find the perfect balance between busy, beautiful, and RELAXED. I am notoriously guilty for always running at a mile a minute, and thank God, literally, that I’ve had the opportunity to head home and take a week and a half vacation. This trip has been unreal. Life goes at a different pace of life here in north Florida.

Slowing down and prioritizing is SO important. I would challenge any person who ever tried to argue with me about the importance of prioritizing ANYTHING over relationships. Nothing is more important. Not our jobs, our blogs, school, or anything else. Keep God first, then you can prioritize friends/family accordingly as you see fit, but make sure you make time for your loved ones (EVERY DAY!), and unplug when you do so.

BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO WORK HARD. If you’re passionate about anything, you have to work your butt off to achieve it. Set goals, have an accountability partner, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Take free online courses, or heck, even go back to school. Just make sure whatever you are doing, you’re doing it intentionally. I appreciate each and every one of my readers, and I appreciate you bearing with this random, sappy, non fashion post today. Hopefully the photos will help a little 😉 I hope each of you have a great day and are able to slow down, prioritize, and start working toward your goals.

Love you guys!

I’m a thrift shopping junkie. My mom set me on this path at a very young age, and I learned the valuable lesson to never pay full price if possible. Now I’m finding even more creative ways to create nifty thrifted outfits. For example, in the outfit above I bought a men’s XXL polo and paired it with my tied up chambray creating (IMO) a super neat double collar. Building on this, I decided to share some thrift shopping tips with everyone.

Mind you, I have lived in teeny tiny towns where the thrift stores weren’t teeming with designer labels, and now I have the experience of living in a place with a TON of thrift shops that have ridiculous, awesome designer finds every time I go. (I’m talking Anthropologie jeans with the tags still attached and Givenchy sandals). But regardless of where I’ve lived, the experience is the same at the core. Here are the items you should hit the thrift stores for first rather than splurging.

Best things to buy at a thrift store:

  • XXL men’s button down or polo
    • A basic single color or crazy print are both great options for cinching at the waist with a belt.
  • Denim
    • You can find great denim at any thrift shop. High-waisted jeans and flares are going to be super hot this Fall, and the cheapest place to find both is by scoring some old school pairs from your favorite Goodwill/thrift . They’re still on the recycle from the last time they were trendy.
    • Find loose fitting jeans and cut them into cutoffs.
  • Bags
    • Sometimes you can find designer pieces, and more often than not you can find really nice, high quality leather pieces.
  • Tanks
    • I always find great undershirts when thrift shopping, and who wants to spend a ton of money on something will (a) not, or (b) barely, see?
  • Business wear
    • Thrift stores are known for having solid business clothes options when you honestly can’t afford to go out and spend $100 on a blazer. You can find pencil skirts and dress pants very easily.
  • Button downs galore
    • You don’t need to throw money down on this basic, there are typically tons of racks of these.
  • Timeless pieces
    • Leather jackets
    • Boots
    • Scarves
    • Fur coats
    • Hats
    • Belts

I Like Big Belts and I Cannot Lie

On Monday I talked about throwbacks and we discussed our favorite throwbacks this season. Well friends, jump on board because a very recent throwback is about to come through again, wide belts.

We have lived in the era of the skinny belt for several years now. Funny enough, if you’ll notice on older shirts vs. newer shirts the little loops on the side used to be much larger/wider to accommodate chunky, wide belts and now they’ve shrunk down to nearly nothing. That’s an issue with an easy solution, just wear the belt right over them. Check out this link to see how wide belts were styled in high fashion land for Fall 2015 (on the runway) and maybe get some more inspiration for how you can style them now.

Pro tip #1- Head to thrift shops to pick these guys up. They are at the sweet spot where you can still find tons of them at your local thrift stores, and there aren’t a ton of them in the popular shops/boutiques yet. Pro tip #2- If these belts seem unwieldy or just too long, use a bobby pin to secure the loose part to the section around your waist. You know what I’m talking about 😉

What do you think, are you ready to bring the wide belt back?
